Leadership Metaphor
People climb mountains
to conquer them. Sometimes, though, they find that the mountains end up
exerting an influence over them of a kind they had never anticipated. This
influence has nothing to do with glamour and achievement and everything to
do with humility and humanity. Michael Useem Understanding my limitations, knowing when to alter a course of action and putting my vision into action are the qualities of leadership that I value. It was through my own journey to the summit where I recognized that providing leadership begins with a true understanding about myself. Knowing my fears, facing my internal shadows and finding courage to move forward provide me with understanding and inner peace. The mountains that leaders are forced to climb offer opportunities to shape and influence the people around us. Each individual has the gifts and abilities to reach the chosen destination. Facing the challenges together is what I embrace. It was the journey, not the summit, that transformed me into a leader who is no longer afraid to uncover my inner shadows and open my heart to understanding.
