Featured Grade Level of the Month-Third Grade Truly flexible seating and furniture in Mrs. Brock’s room is a hit!

Featured Grade Level of the Month-Third Grade:  Third graders have been busy learning how to tackle new nonfiction texts including learning how to identify the languages experts use to how different text structures can convey different information.  Digging in to become experts themselves!  High marks go out to the third grade team for also digging into the Writing Workshop Units of Study to complement the Reading Units.  This is not an expectation, but the team is working hard to try (and learn!) what they can in preparation for full implementation in the next couple years.  The challenges and rewards of opinion writing have been on the agenda these past few weeks.  Do you know how multiplication and division are linked?  Third grade students are certainly discovering that in math.  In social studies, third grade is looking at enhancing their curriculum with some new resources and materials for next year.  A visit to the Nutcracker rounded out December, too!  It’s been a busy month!

Vendor & Craft Fair
Featured Grade Level of the Month-Fourth Grade 4th Grade Heritage School

Fourth graders have the pedal to the metal!  Recently finishing up their “character studies” in reading, unit projects demonstrated all they learned about character changes and impacts on storylines.  The classes have moved on to dissecting the qualities of good nonfiction books and how to best learn from these sometimes challenging texts.  Realistic fiction writing rounded out their language arts time.  Wisconsin history, geography, and culture is a year long endeavor, of course.  Trips to the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MoWA), Heritage School, and our state capital later this year round out this very integrative approach to learning social studies concepts.  Lots of learning happening!

Ozaukee Press Article - Inaccurate Information

Ozaukee Press Article - Inaccurate Information

The Ozaukee Press dated Thursday, March 15, 2018 included an article titled CG-Belgium School District didn't allow student walkout on March 14. The headline is simply not true. No Cedar Grove-Belgium student was prohibited from participating in the walkout as long as an excused absence was on file in respective school offices. The article failed to accurately represent the understanding and support that was provided to all students whether they remained inside a school building or outside a school building as part of a national school walkout that was held on March 14. The administration fully supported any student who had an interest in participating in the national school walkout. The Ozaukee Press was contacted regarding the inaccurate information. The Ozaukee Press indicated it intends to provide a correction with associated March 14th details in its next issue.

Featured Grade Level of the Month - 4K

Our 4K students have had a busy month!  Students and staff talked with a local dentist and received some great tools to help them keep their teeth clean!  Students have studied healthy teeth habits and even did some fun activities and writing to go along with it!  Our 4K also celebrated Valentine’s Day with some fun parent outreach.  Other academics focused on the beginnings of Touch Math, rhyming and word patterns and a start to the ever exciting unit of Dinosaurs!  There is always a lot going on in our 4K classrooms!

National School Walkout Event- CGBSD Response

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students of the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District,

The school shooting that took place in Parkland, Florida, which resulted in 17 students and staff losing their lives has rocked schools across the nation. As many schools grapple with the aftermath, students, staff, and community members are demanding action to help stop school violence. A number of local, state, and nationwide movements have been spurred as a result.

The CGBSD administration is aware of events that are planned around the country and in Wisconsin in response to the Florida shooting and the national conversation that has unfolded. A great deal of attention is currently focused on a national student “ walkout” scheduled for March 14, 2018, the one month anniversary of the Florida shootings scheduled for 10:00 am for a duration of 17 minutes; one minute for each life lost at Stoneman Douglas High School. The walkout was organized by Women’s March Youth EMPOWER in response to gun violence plaguing our schools.

Navy SEAL Commander Shane Anderson Shane Anderson

CGBSD recently invited local superintendents, law enforcement representatives, and buildings and grounds personnel to hear district parent, and Navy SEAL Commander Shane Anderson address school safety. Mr. Anderson shared ideas about safeguards and solutions, emergency action plans, staff training opportunities, and provided an opportunity for those in attendance to ask questions and share thoughts and ideas.

Thank you Mr. Anderson!

2018 Recreation Survey Recreation

THE NEW COMMUNITY RECREATION PROGRAM IS HERE and is looking to hear from YOU!   The new program will focus on providing affordable activities, courses, and workshops for all age groups.  I have attached a short survey to allow you the opportunity to share with me your opinions on what may be of interest to you and your family, and what you would consider attending.   The results of the survey will determine what type of programming we will offer, beginning in the fall of 2018.

There are three components to the survey (please complete what is applicable to you and your family):
•    Youth
•    Adults
•    Seniors

The survey should only take a few minutes to complete and your opinions are vital to shaping our initial offerings!  I look forward to hear your ideas and with your help build a successful community recreation program.
Thank you for your time and cooperation in completing this survey.

Schedule Change

The Saturday, February 24th Swim Lesson session has been rescheduled for Saturday March 3rd. (same times)

Grade Level of the Month- 5K:

There is always a ton of fun happening in 5K! The 100th day of school, our PBIS Celebratory Dance Party, and Valentine’s Day makes it an exciting time to be a kid.  Our 5K teachers have been busily implementing Reader’s Workshop and using their new reading level data to plan strategy groups and instruction to meet these little readers right where they are at.  It is a joy to see kids reading and interacting with literature in new and challenging ways.  In science, animals, trees, weather, and motion are all areas students are the subjects of hands on experiments.  Number sense, understanding teen number concepts, and addition strategies round out the math curriculum.  Tons of learning!

Crisis Response
Our Deepest Sympathies Lily

Our deepest sympathies go out to the students, staff, families, and all who were affected by the senseless tragedy that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.
Please be assured that while no none can plan for such a horrific event, CGBSD is doing and will continue to do everything we can to keep our students safe.

SOUPer Bowl Food Drive Food Drive

The Elementary School is collecting non-perishable food items.  The Soup-er Bowl food drive will run from January 22nd through February 2nd and the donations will be received by the Cedar Grove Area Food Pantry.  The food pantry serves about 25 families from our CGB community each month by distributing bags of non-perishable food, milk, eggs and paper products.  During the food drive, place your items in the bin of the team you’d like to see win the Super Bowl.  These bins are located in the elementary school lunchroom.  Your choices are the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.  At this time the food pantry is particularly in need of cereal, peanut butter, pasta and canned fruit.  Of course any donations are appreciated!  Thank you for your support!

Featured Grade Level of the Month - 1st Grade

First grade was busy during the month of December and into January with preparations needed for the Holiday Concert, Mrs. Peterson’s Farewell, festive activities, and Winter Break all happening this past month!  Each classroom visited the TeRonde House just down the road to learn about our community’s history and heritage.  Work began on the study of Non-Fiction texts in reading while some teachers in first grade are dabbling in Writing Workshop, too.  Interactive flat panel boards arrived and teachers are excited to learn more about integrating them at our January in-service day.  In math, subtraction strategies by counting down to ten is the focus.  In science, the study of plants and animals, sound and light, and weather dominated the hands on activities and investigations.  First grade is always a busy place!

Public Library Books Book return

A friendly reminder from our library staff that students can return their public library books to our elementary library.  A box is set aside and someone from the library will pick them up.  No matter how late the books are, when students return them to us, they are not considered overdue.
